THE Weymouth Go Spike Beach Volleyball League starts up again tomorrow evening.

The permanent courts on the town's beach, close to the Boat Cafe, first went up in 2012 and similar versions can now be seen on many beaches around the country.

However, figures show that Weymouth’s courts continue to be some of the most frequently used across the UK.

The Weymouth league runs until the end of July and there are competitions for all standards of player, from complete beginners to experts. Each player can choose at what level they compete every week.

The two-a-side A event is for experienced players who are looking for strong competition.

This always produces exciting volleyball to watch and at the end of the season the player with the most points will be awarded the coveted King Of The Beach award.

Current holders Dave James and Rob Odsterczl are keen to defend their title but will face stiff competition from players such as Terry Oldrid, Ali Mitchell, Craig Bishop and Dom Cosserat, among others.

The two-a-side B series is for players who have some experience of the sport and may want to go on to compete in the A series in the future.

Many of Weymouth’s top players started playing in this section before graduating to the A Series.

The third section is a four-a-side competition for beginners or inexperienced players.

It is hoped this will attract some of the players who compete in the always popular Battens Charity evening or who play in Division Two of the Weymouth Indoor League.

Each team can have a squad of up to six players per night.

One of the reasons the Go Spike League seems so popular is that teams do not need to commit to the whole summer but can just enter on the evening of a particular week.

To register, teams need to meet at the courts between 6pm and 6.30pm.

Meanwhile, entries are now open for the annual Battens Solicitors Charity Beach Volleyball Tournament, which will take place on July 23.

A spokerperson for the event said: “This is the fun networking event of the summer, when members of the local business community, friends and colleagues are encouraged to come along and enjoy an evening on Weymouth’s golden beach.”
