FUDOSHIN Ju Jitsu hosted its annual games tournament at Dorchester Judo Club, with more than 40 students aged between five and 17 attending.

This year the Dorchester and Sherborne clubs were joined by fellow Fudoshin Ju Jitsu students from Lincolnshire, who travelled down to compete with Sensei Paul Reed.

In addition to the action-packed team disciplines, including breakfall races, hop wrestling, sumo wrestling and one-on-one tug-of-war, a triple contest competition was held for students over the age of 12.

Before that, Shihan Kevin King explained the rules and demonstrated scoring techniques for the sparring element, Sensei Paul Reed taught throwing combinations and counters, and Sensei Nick Maton passed on some ground fighting tips and skills.

Students were split into three age groups and each category was hotly contested, with all competitors showing great determination and a high level of ability.

The under-18 category was won by Catherine Williams (Lincolnshire), Cody Rowland (Sherborne) was second and Joe Sanders (Sherborne) came third.

In the under-16s, Sam Reynolds (Sherborne) claimed victory followed by Mason Coombe and Michael Norman (both Dorchester).

Josh Clark (Dorchester) came first in the under-14 category, with Dan Warland second and Pip Van Spyk (both Lincolnshire) third.

All the competitors in the games tournament received a gold, silver or bronze medal depending on their team’s performance, as well as a chocolate selection box.

Trophies were also awarded for the top students in each club and the best display of technique in the tournament.

Three students were promoted to brown belt (2nd Mon), three to green (4th Mon) and one each to green stripe, orange belt (5th Mon) and orange stripe.

Classes have resumed at Dorchester Judo Club, they begin again at Gryphon Leisure Centre, Sherborne from tomorrow, and new classes started at Dorchester Sports Centre yesterday.
