A SPECIAL moment in First World War history will be commemorated in a community event organised by Weymouth and Portland churches.

Silent Night will be an evening of carols and drama at the Bob Lucas Stadium, the home of Weymouth Football Club, in Radipole Lane to mark 100 years since the German and British armies held a spontaneous truce and played football between the trenches.

Anni Douglas, REFRESH Co-ordinator for The Church in Weymouth and Portland, said: “It’s not just for churchgoers, it’s a community event and everyone is most warmly welcome to come along.

“Everyone likes Christmas carols, even if they don’t enjoy going to church, and this is a great opportunity for everyone to come together.”

She added: “The stadium has been fantastic and has given us the venue for free as their contribution.”

The event on Thursday, December 4 will be in aid of the Salvation Army, Help for Heroes and the Tear Fund for Syrian Refugees.

MP Richard Drax and AFC Bournemouth Club Chaplain Andy Rimmer will give readings and the church youth group will be performing their re-enactment of the Christmas truce.

Hot drinks, including mulled wine and mince pies, will be available in the football club stadium cafe. Anni said: “I think it’s going to be a really lovely evening.

“There are a number of schools and various groups getting involved.”

Entry and parking are free and the event will begin at 6pm.
