A MOTHER is calling on mobility scooter users to drive safely after an accident left her with a dislocated knee.

Rebecca Vicery of Wedgewood Drive, has been told she could be off work until after Christmas following the accident at the Asda store on Newstead Road.

She had been shopping at the Newstead Road store on Friday when an elderly man on a mobility scooter collided with her.

Paramedics were called and Mrs Vicery was taken to hospital to receive treatment for a dislocated knee.

She said: “I feel lucky in a way because I would hate to think of him running into a child or older person. It was quite scary because he clearly just couldn’t control the scooter.”

Mrs Vicery, who has four children, said she saw the man getting onto the mobility scooter in the foyer of the store.

The next thing she knew he had crashed into the back of her legs.

She added: “I’ve been told at the moment to take two weeks off work as I now have to use crutches to get around. But the doctors at the hospital told me I might not be able to go back until after Christmas if it takes a long time to heal.”

Rebecca’s mum Sally Gledhill also spoke out to raise awareness of the issue.

She said: “I wasn’t there but I was told the gentleman, who was elderly, was quite distressed about what happened. I don’t think that mobility scooters, which can be quite large vehicles, should be allowed in the foyer of a store, which was very busy at the time. The paramedic said it was the worst dislocation he had ever seen.

“My daughter is still in a lot of discomfort. I think people do need to be aware of the dangers of mobility scooters otherwise more accidents could happen.”

A manager at the Asda Weymouth store declined to comment.

A spokesperson for the South West Ambulance Service Trust said: “A lady was hit by a mobility scooter at Asda in Weymouth. She sustained a leg injury and was taken to Dorset County Hospital for treatment.”
