LYME REGIS: People turned out in force to share their views on the town’s much- anticipated skatepark at a one-day consultation.

Lyme Regis Town Council hosted an open day on Monday, to give the community the chance to talk to project leaders about the proposals for the skatepark at the north east corner of Charmouth Road car park.

Project plans went on public display from 2pm to 7pm in the Jubilee Pavilion on the Marine Parade.

More than 25 people attended the consultation, which saw experts from skatepark designers Wheelscape and town councillors discuss proposals and answer questions from residents.

Speaking at the consultation, Cllr Lucy Campbell said: “We’ve had some very positive comments and the designers have addressed previous concerns.”

Among those looking at the plans were Lyme residents Richard and Jess Benson, who live a five-minute walk away from the proposed skatepark.

They said: “We wanted to see the exact location of the skatepark in the car park and how many parking spaces it would lose.

“We own a business in Lyme so factors like these are important, but looking at the plans there will be not many spaces lost at all.

“Overall, we wanted to come along and show our support for the project.

“It’s great for the town, in a safe location and is very overdue.”

Also at the consultation were Lenny Partridge and James Riley, who are both 15.

They welcomed the amended plans and said it would be ‘amazing’ if the skatepark went ahead.

The town council committed £150,000 to the project in November, and Wheelscape were selected to design and build the skatepark in April.

Designer Jeremy Donaldson from Wheelscape said: “It’s a pretty steep sloping site so we’ve developed a unique design to allow a constant flow on that park.

“There are no plans to light the skatepark at night, and we’ve made this ‘L-shaped’ wall around the site to tackle noise.”

The planning application has been submitted to West Dorset District Council and the formal consultation process is now open.

Cllr Cheryl Reynolds said: “I first campaigned for a skatepark when my son was six; he will be 50 years old in April next year.

“It’s great to see the designs up on the wall here but I want to now see it in real life.”

The application can be seen at dorsetforyou.com, application number WD/D/14/002477, and comments must be submitted by Tuesday, November 18.
