LYME REGIS: Each year in November the town commemorates the ultimate sacrifice of the thousands of men and women who have died in the service of their country.

This year, the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and the 70th anniversary of D-Day is particularly significant.

The Royal British Legion is inviting as many townsfolk as possible to share the commemorations in a range of various forthcoming events.

On November 8 poppies will be laid on the Commonwealth war graves at Lyme Regis cemetery at 10.30am, together with a service of remembrance at the HMS Formidable memorial and a short service at The Polish War memorial in Anning Road at 11am.

The town’s Remembrance Sunday parade and service will take place on November 9.

All those wishing to parade are asked to gather at the Langmoor Gardens entrance no later than 9.30am to parade to the church for a 10am service led by the Reverend Jane Skinner.

A short service of remembrance for Armistice Day will also be held on November 11 at the war memorial on Monmouth Street from 11am.

Other events this year include the Lyme Regis Royal British Legion annual general meeting on November 27, which will take place at 7pm at The Woodmead Hall, followed by refreshments.
