Five apprentice firefighters joined the Dorset Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) apprenticeship scheme last week.

Alongside their operational training, the five have to visit Kingston Maurward College on a day release basis to work towards to work towards an NVQ Level Three Diploma in Emergency Fire Service Operations in the Community and a BTEC Diploma in Emergency Fire Service Operations.

Chief Fire Officer Darran Gunter said: “I am delighted to welcome these five young apprentices to Dorset Fire and Rescue Service.

“This exciting new project not only allows the service to address our ageing workforce concerns but also support the training and development of young people in our communities. This is a fantastic opportunity for these young people to gain a number of qualifications and potentially a career as a firefighter.

“Whilst all public services face a very challenging future, we must continue to ensure that wherever possible we provide opportunities for local young people.”

Terry Clapp, DFRS apprentices manager said: “The apprenticeship scheme is a two-year long programme which will allow the apprentices to become fully qualified operational firefighters while gaining two qualifications. They will be working with wholetime stations in Poole and Bournemouth.”
