DOG owners and their pets are invited to a Portland event in aid of an animal charity.

Guide Dogs Week runs from October 4 to 12 this year and the Weymouth and Dorchester fundraising branch of the charity is holding a sponsored dog walk and fun show at New Ground on Portland.

The event on Sunday, October 5 is part of the Dogs Unite initiative which encourages pet owners to raise money to help create more life-changing guide dog partnerships.

Mary Larkin, Weymouth and Dorchester Group Organiser, said: “This event is a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the stunning scenery on the beautiful Isle of Portland and to enjoy quality time with family, friends and your beloved pets, as well as raising funds for this very worthwhile cause.”

Both walks will start at 11am and there are two routes of 45 minutes and two hours, each taking in the breathtaking views the island has to offer.

The walk will be followed by a fun dog show which will have classes such as the Waggiest Tail or Who Can Eat the Sausage the Quickest? In addition, there will be entertainment, stalls and refreshments available at the New Ground site.

Those wanting to take part in the sponsored walk are encouraged to register online before the event, via the Portland Dogs Unite webpage at www.guidedogs.org or by calling 0845 600 6787.

Registration for the walk costs £3 and can also be done on the day from 10.30am.

Dog show registration is on the day at £2 per entry per class. More details are available at dorsetdog.com
