BridportFM radio station has been a success on the airwaves, organisers say.

The service has been running since Monday and daily shows can be heard from 9am to 9pm on 87.7FM or online until Sunday.

And the fun doesn’t stop there with a live broadcast of band The Sidekicks performing at the Bridport Arts Centre on Sunday at 7pm.

All of the shows broadcast can also be downloaded from the Bridport Arts Centre website until mid-October.

The idea for a one-week radio debut came from a pilot radio week held in the town back in 2012.

The broadcasting of BridportFM this week marked the culmination of a 10-month community radio project which offered volunteers free training in programme making, interview techniques, presenting and learning broadcasting skills.

Kate Wilson, Bridport Arts Centre learning co-ordinator said: “The start to BridportFM has been absolutely fantastic and we’ve been delighted with the quality of the shows on air.

“Everyone involved has worked really hard producing shows that highlight the variety of life in Bridport.

“We received a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund which has enabled all of this to happen and we are incredibly grateful.

“We have shows exploring the cultural history of Bridport including organisations like the Film Society and the Bridport Pantomime Players.

“A morning show focusing on why people such as Clive Stafford Smith moved to Bridport has also been a highlight and has been on this week too.

“Examples of other daily shows include A Village Remembered at 4pm and Lest We Forget from 7pm to 8pm presented by West Bay vicar Philip Ringer. A massive thankyou to all the volunteers who have made BridportFM what it is; without the variety and interesting stories of local people it wouldn’t have got so far.

“BridportFM really is a local radio station for local people.

“I think the community have really enjoyed listening to us so far and they can still listen until Sunday.”

Kate added that a highlight for people to look forward to is the live concert broadcast on Sunday.

The final BridportFM broadcast will celebrate the achievements of the week on air, switching between broadcasting the gig itself and chatting with people who’ve been involved in the week.

In addition, running all this week between 10am and 11am there has been an hour-long magazine-style show, ‘Good Morning Bridport’, with music, interviews and local news.

A variety of local themes have been discussed – from education to housing, charity shops to book groups.
