Turn Lyme Green member Simon West has a strong green pulse running through his life and his business.

In 2011, he retrofitted all the halogen lights in his home and office and replaced them with a selection of LED and low energy bulbs.

The difficulty arose when it came to recycling the old units, as they contain mercury and other substances that need to be disposed of safely. A growing number of recycling centres are able to take them, but the nearest one to Lyme is a 20-minute drive and 10 miles away in Bridport.

Simon said: “I figured that of the 2,500 households in the immediate area, there are approximately 25,000 bulbs of various sorts and we’d all benefit from a greener solution closer to home. With an average lifespan of three years, there are around 20 bulbs reaching the end of their life in Lyme every day.”

After a little research, Simon found Recolight, a CFL and LED recycling company and following discussions with Chloe Savidge, owner of Love and Wonder on Broad Street (previously Ecological You), it was decided she would host a box in her shop for any old bulbs to be deposited for safe recycling.

She said: “We’re so pleased to be able to offer up some space for the recycling box.

“We look forward to working together with Turn Lyme Green in the future to improve our eco credentials and provide space where we can to host any Turn Lyme Green ideas and information.”

If you have any CFL or LED light bulbs that you need to dispose of, drop into Love and Wonder and speak to Chloe who will be delighted to shine a light on the problem.
