MEMBERS of Weymouth Angling Society signed on to fish their August league match as a rover from the Chesil Centre.

Chesil proved once again what a great beach it is to fish, producing several species including bream, garfish, scad, poor cod, dogfish, red gurnard, tub gurnard, red mullet and a total of 24 cod, which were landed between the Bridging Camp and Moon-fleet.

Richie King took the honours on the day with 7.45kg with Pete Hegg second with 6.36kg.

Special mention should go to Goodwin, who has caught a total of 21 species so far in this series of boat competitions, a record for this trophy.

West Bay SAC THIS year’s autumn open boat match was fished in perfect conditions with light winds and a good tide.

The fishing in Lyme Bay has been very poor all summer so competitors were hoping for some better fish this time around.

This competition was fished as a team match with the average score of the team counting towards prizes.

Twenty anglers were split into teams of two or three and set off for the day.

Some fine fish were returned to the scales including bass, black bream, gurnard, pollack, plaice, mackerel and a surprise John Dory.

Team ‘Miss Grace’ made up of father and son team Rod and James Barr took first place with an average percentage of 138, both anglers weighing in a black bream and a red gurnard each with Rod Barr’s red gurnard a specimen of 101 per cent – the best of the day.

Second place was taken by team ‘Wahoo’, which included Graham Stephenson, Rob Steph-enson and Steve Chambers.

The trio scored an average of 118 per cent and caught some fine fish including bream, bass and pollack.

Third was taken by team ‘Pilchard’ which included Brian Moss, Jack Wood and Darren Herbert, who averaged 109 per cent.

Moss had a cracking mackerel of 885g and Wood followed this with a plaice of 1,600g.

FLAMING GOOD

IAN Nash, from Somerset, has landed some flaming good catches recently, while fishing aboard Colin Penny’s Flamer IV.

Nash beat his personal best plaice record by a pound by landing a fish of 6lb while drift fishing a small mussel bed, using 8lb class tackle with lots of coloured attractor beds and a cocktail of squid and ragworm for bait.

A week later, he landed a 14lb bull huss and an undulate ray of 14lb 8oz, using 20lb class tackle with a pennel rig baited with mackerel and squid, both fish were returned alive.

BREAM HAUL

STUART White and friends took to sea to enjoy a day of fishing aboard Josh Simmonds’ ‘Fish On 2’.
The lads landed about 50 bream to about 4lb; six good sized plaice to 4lb but unfortunately the Portland Race was too rough to fish for bass.

This was especially as there were already two people throwing up; although one bass of about 5lb was caught from the edge of the Race.
