MONTHS of training and planning will pay off for a Dorset fundraiser who is trekking the Inca Trail in Peru in aid of a local charity.

Gareth Bishop will set off on his latest challenge for Greyhound Rescue West of England on September 19.

Gareth, who has his own rescued greyhound, Kelly, has been in training for months to prepare for the five-day trek.

His previous efforts for the charity include climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Snowdon and the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge.

His latest feat will involve scaling heights of up to 14,583 feet.

Gareth, who works for South West Trains and lives in Blandford Forum, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of raising money for Greyhound Rescue West of England last year and this latest adventure to Peru looks to be just as exciting.

“Our family adopted a greyhound, Kelly, from the charity last year and she has brought so much joy to us all that this has inspired me to don my walking boots yet again to support these often overlooked older hounds.

“I was delighted with all of the support I received last year when I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and I aim to raise even more money this year with my Machu Picchu trek and I would be grateful for any donations no matter how small.”

This latest challenge ties in with Greyhound Rescue West of England’s recently launched New Life Appeal, to find forever homes for older greyhounds and lurchers.

Many of the dogs who arrive in the charity’s care are in their twilight years and the charity never turns a dog away because he or she is too old, so funds are desperately needed to help support them.

Rachel Grocott, CEO of Greyhound Rescue West of England, said: “We believe that every dog deserves the chance of a new life and our New Life Appeal aims to help re-home and care for as many of these dogs in need as possible.

“We are so grateful to Gareth for his dedication to the charity and are delighted that he has set himself a new challenge to support our vital work.”
