SHOWJUMPING llamas and daredevil stunt displays are some of the headline acts set to draw thousands of people to the Dorset County Show this weekend.

The annual event is taking place on Saturday and Sunday and promises something for everyone, from traditional livestock and homecraft classes to thrilling entertainment.

This year there are more trade stands than ever before and it is a record-breaking year for entries into the homecraft classes.

Show secretary Sam Mackenzie-Green said: “We have 540 trade stands this year, which is quite a significant record for us, and we probably could have sold up to 40 more, so it shows how much people want to be here and be a part of it. When I first started as show secretary there were 850 entries into homecraft, now there are 2,312.

“There has been a real resurgence of interest in home skills, thanks largely to celebrities like Kirsty Alsop and Mary Berry, so it’s great to see that.”

Fresh from appearing on Britain’s Got Talent, motorcycle stunt team Bolddog Lings will be showing off their adrenaline-fuelled displays in the main ring on both days and Blackrock Llamas will be proving their agility on a specially designed obstacle course in the Symonds and Sampson Countryside Ring. There is also ferret racing, horse and pony showing and a showjumping display and competition.

Sam said: “The interesting thing about the show is that everyone has their own favourite part.”

She added: “The one thing that everyone loves is the food tent, it’s where people congregate.”

Local chefs will be putting on a live cookery demonstration in the food hall, where more than 60 stands will be offering wares from Dorset and beyond.

Food lovers can also look forward to a new class for 2014, the ugly fruit class, and the National Vegetable Society’s National Championships.

Sam added that she wanted to say a ‘massive thank you’ to the volunteers who help organise the show.

“We have only two paid members of staff, and everyone else is a volunteer who gives their time freely to help make this possible.

“It is a mammoth task for everyone involved and we are lucky to have a fantastic team who enjoy being a part of it.”
