CHILDREN joined dozens of fundraisers on a walk from Beaminster to Bridport to raise money for a cancer charity.

Around 50 people got involved in the event run by Slimming World earlier this month, including youngsters, and got into the spirit of things by wearing pink.

Organiser Becs King, who runs slimming groups in both towns, said the walk was a ‘huge success’.

She added: “The sun shone and we completed the walk in 2.5 hours. I’m so proud of all my members and the locals who joined us, but I must say that Hermione, aged 10, Izzy, aged eight, and Ruby, aged four, who all walked the whole distance with us, were little superstars.”

The event is one of a number which were held throughout the summer across the UK in aid of Cancer Research UK.

West Dorset participants managed to raise £1,794.

Becs said: “I’d like to say a massive thanks to the BIFIT Beaminster hour lending us a fitness instructor to warm up before the walk and local landlords of the Hare & Hound for supplying us with refreshments half way. Lastly, I’d like to thank the Bridport News for supporting this event.”

Becs appealed through the pages of the Bridport News for as many people as possible to get involved in the event.

She added: “Every penny raised will go towards an amazing cause, helping Cancer Research UK to fund pioneering, life-saving research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of all cancers. One in three people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and research has shown that many types of cancer are more common in people who are overweight.

“Cancer touches so many people’s lives and at Slimming World we’re determined to do anything we can to help people lead healthier lives in whatever way possible. That’s why I’m so pleased that my group is getting behind this event and encouraging others to do the same.”
