CHILDREN joined dozens of fundraisers on a walk from Beaminster to Bridport to raise money for a cancer charity.

Around 50 people, including youngsters, were involved in the event run by Slimming World and they got into the spirit of it by wearing pink.

Organiser Becs King, who runs slimming groups in both towns, said the walk was a ‘huge success’.

She added: “The sun shone and we completed the walk in 2.5 hours.

“I’m so proud of all my members and the locals who joined us but I must say that Hermione, aged 10, Izzy, aged eight, and Ruby, aged four, who walked the whole distance with us were little super stars.”

The event is one of a number which were held throughout the summer across the UK in aid of Cancer Research UK.

West Dorset participants managed to raise £1,794.

Becs said: “I’d like to say a massive thanks the BIFIT Beaminster hour group lending us a fitness instructor to warm up before the walk and local landlords of the Hare & Hounds pub for supplying us with refreshments half way.

“Lastly I’d like to thank the Bridport and Lyme Regis News for supporting this event, leading to it being a huge success.”

Becs appealed through the pages of the News for as many people as possible to get involved.

She added: “Every penny raised will go towards an amazing cause, helping Cancer Research UK to fund pioneering, life-saving research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of all cancers. One in three people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and research has shown that many types of cancer are more common in people who are overweight.

“Cancer touches so many people’s lives and at Slimming World we’re determined to do anything we can to help people lead healthier lives in whatever way possible.

“That’s why I’m so pleased that my group is getting behind this event and encouraging others to do the same.”
