COUNTY: A charity has released a book to combat loneliness after a quarter of older and disabled people using care services in Dorset claimed they didn’t have enough social contact.

The information follows a survey by the government’s Health and Social Care Information Centre.

A quarter of people questioned in Dorset said that they either did not have enough social contact, or that they felt socially isolated.

The book by charity Independent Age, offers information and advice services for older people, their families and carers.

Charity chief executive Janet Morrison said: “These figures present a worrying picture of social care users’ loneliness – not just in Dorset but in many parts of England.

“Nationally, a million people over the age of 65 still say they are often or always lonely.

“That’s why we’ve just brought out a free Wise Guide book called Healthy, Happy, Connected – Support and Advice for Older People Living Alone.”
