Janet set to tackle Great Wall of China for good cause
A CARER from Lyme Regis will tackle the Great Wall of China on behalf of the Marie Curie charity after losing her mother to a rare form of cancer.
Determined Janet Barratt-Pearce, 60, has never taken on a challenge of this scale before but promised her mother before she died that she would complete the trek for her.
Janet’s mother, Rita Bryans, passed away on April 26 this year after suffering with Burkitts Lymphoma cancer.
Janet, a mother of five children, is now appealing to the community to help her fundraise for the trip.
She said: “Mum was in a Marie Curie Hospice in London before she died, and during that time I promised her I would do the trek for her, which runs from May 9 to 17 next year.
“Mum only lived for six months from diagnosis to her death in April and was only in the London Marie Curie hospice for 10 days, but the nurses were so wonderful and do a fantastic job.
“It’s important that people suffering can go to hospices like Marie Curie and get specialist care for the last weeks of their life.”
The Marie Curie Great Wall of China Trek is a nine-day trip with five days trekking.
There will be the opportunity to trek the 15th-century Ming Dynasty hardrock wall, before descending on local trails to experience the rural life of people in the Hebei Province.
Marie Curie Cancer Care is a UK charity dedicated to the care of people with terminal illnesses, with more than 2,000 nurses who provide free end of life care.
The charity also has nine hospices and is the largest provider of hospice beds outside the NHS.
Amy Salmon, Marie Curie community fundraiser for Dorset, said: “Without supporters like Janet we wouldn’t be able to do the work we do.
“We are so grateful; this money will enable us to reach out to more people in Dorset at a time when they need it most.”
