HELENA Lucas and Portland’s Megan Pascoe will both be aiming for their second ISAF Sailing World Cup victories of 2014 this week when they take to the waters of Hyeres, France in the 2.4mR class.

Paralympic champion Lucas and 2013 2.4mR Open Worlds bronze medallist Pascoe have one win apiece in the one-person class this season heading into the final event of the 2013/14 World Cup series, which starts today.

Lucas gained the upper hand at the most recent regatta in Palma, Mallorca earlier this month, while Pascoe claimed top honours on Miami’s Biscayne Bay in January.

But although the British sailing team stable-mates will battle it out for podium honours again this week, they will face fierce competition in their quest for British dominance on the medal podium.

Local hero Damien Seguin is set to get plenty of support when he competes on home waters, while there is also strong competition from the Netherlands and Germany.

Lucas and Pascoe are among 68 British sailors preparing to compete across eight of the 12 Olympic and Paralympic classes to take place at the French venue.

In the 49erFX fleet, Weymouth’s Charlotte Dobson goes into her racing with fond memories of Hyeres.

It was the site of her first podium finish in the new women’s skiff event. She secured silver with Mary Rook in 2013, and will head into the 2014 edition with confidence having claimed World Cup bronze with permanent crew Sophie Ainsworth in Palma two weeks ago.

Weymouth’s world champion Nick Dempsey spearheads the British challenge in the RS:X men’s windsurfing event.

Meanwhile, John Robertson, Hannah Stodel and Steve Thomas will be among the eight teams competing in the three-person Paralympic Sonar event.

The British sailing team’s Finn squad misses the regatta in preparation for the European Championships at La Rochelle (May 5-10), while the RS:X women’s windsurfers have also opted to skip the event in favour of domestic training.

Racing at Hyeres starts today with the final medal races scheduled for Saturday.
