CHILDREN from schools in Charmouth and Lyme Regis were buried in their books as they celebrated World Book Day.

The annual celebration of all things literary took place on Thursday last week, March 6, with eager readers from St Michael’s Primary School and Charmouth Primary School taking part in activities throughout the week to mark the international event.

Pupils at Charmouth Primary School enjoyed a week packed full of book-day related events with a book fair running in school week and an assembly led by local author Martin Maudsley, who shared his stories with the school.

The week culminated in a fancy-dress day where the children dressed up in costumes as a character from their favourite book.

An array of characters attended the school, such as Mr Gum, Fantastic Mr Fox and Alice in Wonderland.

Gillian Morris, headteacher at Charmouth Primary School, said: “It has been lovely to see so many children browsing the book stalls and hear them talk about books that they have read or would like to read.”

The school also presented each student with a bookmark and is now planning to take each class on a school trip to Charmouth Library over the next few weeks.

In its 19th year, World Book Day was created by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation to promote reading, publishing and copyright of books worldwide.

It is marked in all countries that are a member of the UN.

Children at St Michael’s Primary School in Lyme Regis also went into school dressed up as their favourite fictional character which resulted in a variety of different characters, from Harry Potter to the Hunger Games.

As part of the day, the pupils also had to take in the book the character was from and were given a ‘World Book Day’ token which they can redeem at Serendip bookstore.
