FIREFIGHTERS turned out in force to deal with a chimney fire in a West Dorset pub.

Four crews from Bridport and Weymouth including an aerial ladder platform from Yeovil were called to The Crown Inn at Puncknowle after a blaze inside the chimney.

The thatched roof of the historic building was not damaged in the fire and crews finally left the scene at 12.30am today.

Publican Alex Alexander praised Dorset Fire and Rescue Service and said they had been lucky.

“The pub isn’t open on Sunday evenings and we were just sitting down with a drink when it caught, “ said Mr Alexander.

“We were quite lucky in that we were there. It was a good response from the fire brigade and because the fire was in the chimney there was just some dust and mess to clear up today.

“That was all done this morning and we are open for business.”
