If the place begins with B then we'll race there, say Bridport Runners
THE Bridport Runners have a novel timetable for 2014 – they want to run races in places beginning with B.
They have already made a start this month at the Blackmore Vale Half Marathon, with eight runners all doing the 13.2 miles in under two hours, the first Bridport Runner across the line was Ben Renshaw in one hour and 18 minutes.
More races to come in the B series will include the Bath Half Marathon on March 2, the Brighton Marathon on April 6 and the Bournemouth Marathon on October 4.
The highlight of the year will be the Berlin Marathon on September 28 when six Bridport Runners will take part.
Runners’ spokesman Hagen Gerle said: “This is supposed to be one of the best and fastest marathon races in the world.”
While the runners try to keep up with that tradition runner Vicky Ackerman will be on a fundraising mission collecting money for the charity Get Kids Going.
The charity supports disabled children up to the age of 26 to access sport by providing equipment and support.
She has already set up a donation website at virginmoneygiving.com/ BridportRunners Apart from participating in these prestigious races, Bridport Runners will again organise their own local ‘B’ races.
They will host for the second time, together with the Bridport Leisure Centre and the Brit Valley Rotary Club, the Bridport Jurassic Coast Run which will include a 10 kilometres, a five kilometres, a one mile and a family fun run.
The event will take place on Sunday, July 13, at the Bridport Leisure Centre.
Bridport Runners is starting its new beginners class on Wednesday, March 12, at 6 pm at the car park of Bridport Leisure Centre.
The club’s classic Bridport Mile or Sports Relief Mile, a one mile long run at St Mary’s School in Bridport, will take place on Sunday, March 23, at 11:40am. Everyone is welcome.
Leaflets with more information about the beginners’ class and Bridport Mile will be available at the leisure centre from Wednesday, March 5.
Bridport Runners’ chairman Brian Shelley said: “I hope that many people will come to our local running events and enjoy them. As an old Leonard Cohen fan, I think our motto for this year should be: ‘First we take Bridport – then we take Berlin.’
