When it comes to top TV backdrops, Broadchurch’s West Bay beats Australia, New York and even the paradise island of Guadeloupe according to a new poll.

The stunning scenery of West Dorset’s Jurassic Coast which played a starring role in the top-rating ITV drama series, has been placed fourth in league table of global locations used as settings on television.

David Tennant and Olivia Colman star in the whodunnit drama written by Bridport resident Chris Chibnall, which returns to ITV in 2014.

West Bay has seen a soar in visitor numbers since the show hit the screens last year. Another series will be screened this year.

The Radio Times readers’ poll put the tiny Bridport harbour above the stunning scenery of New Zealand for Top of the Lake, Australia for I’m a Celebrity, New York for Mad Men and even the sun-soaked island of Guadeloupe where Death in Paradise is filmed.

The magazine says: “The action takes place at West Bay, which is two miles from Bridport. Local entrepreneurs have set up Broadchurch walking tours, but you can do it yourself by visiting the death cliff and stunning seaside spot at West Bay, the police station at the Folly, Quay West, plus village spots from the series including the Harbour Newsagent, the Ellipse Caffé Bistro and Chesil House – where Olivia Colman’s DS Ellie Miller stays.”

In top spot in the vote came Iceland, the location for Game of Thrones, which pipped Doc Martin’s Cornwall into second place and London, setting for Mr Selfridge into third.
