LYME Regis-based youth music charity B Sharp will be expanding across West Dorset as it looks to offer more access to making music for teenagers.

The charity, first founded in 2007, has enjoyed massive success in recent years, highlighted by a performance in the opening ceremony in Weymouth for the 2012 Olympics.

Now, the charity is increasing in size with two new musical ensembles and inviting people from West Dorset and East Devon to take part, as part of a response to the 2013 Ofsted report.

Fran Williams, pictured, director of B Sharp, said: “In November 2013, Ofsted reported that all children have a right to group music tuition, but all too often they miss out. B Sharp is determined to do something about this for the children and young people living in rural areas of West Dorset and East Devon.

“By teaming up with music education hubs, schools, the youth service and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra we are offering a range of extra-curricular music making and progression opportunities.”

The two musical ensembles will be called B Sharp Voices, for budding singers, and The B Sharp Collective, for instrumentalists and vocalists.

B Sharp will hold two taster and registration sessions for the new groups on Sunday, January 26.

One will take place in Bridport at the Bridport WI Hall from 10am until 1pm, and a second session will take place in Lyme Regis at the Woodmead Halls, from 2pm until 5pm.

Mrs Williams added: “There are so many young musicians and families waiting for an opportunity like this.

“Our message is if you're interested in making good music, playing, singing, writing, recording and performance – whatever your experience or interest – there is something for you.

“Just come along and check it out for yourself.

“What makes B Sharp special is its ability to bring young people together, to share ideas and create amazing music and events which have the power to change lives.”
