Butcher bids for best bangers in Britain award
BRIDPORT based RJ Balson and Son will aim to prove it still has the best bangers in Britain at a competition in Bristol next week.
The butchers in West Allington is the oldest in the country, having opened in 1515, and will go up against other butchers from all over the south West in a bid to prove it still produces the best sizzling sausages.
Love Pork will be hosting the event in Bristol on November 7 as part of a national tour to discover the land’s greatest sausage as part of British Sausage Week 2013.
There were more than 300 entries for the competition and they were whittled down to 11 butchers, with all of them providing their prized porkers in the New Sausage Development or Traditional Sausage categories.
They will all cook their sausages at the same time, before celebrity chef Simon Rimmer will taste the bangers and then crown the south West winner of the British Banger Award.
RJ Balson and Son submitted their Farmhouse Pork Sausage and Pork Sweet Chilli sausage to the competition earlier in the year.
Richard Balson, owner of the butchers, said: “We have been selling the pork and sweet chilli sausage for two or three years now and they are really popular.
“Since we have started selling them they have gone down really well and every food fair we have been to they have gone down very well so we are very pleased with it.”
The traditional farmhouse pork sausage is made by the butchers using the same recipe and methods since the butchers first opened.
Mr Balson said: “It’s a good quality sausage, using local pork.
“It is and has been the cornerstone of this business since the start and it is our best seller.
“All the local bed and breakfasts have them and they always keep coming back for more, because there is nothing worse when you are in a hotel and you have a cheap supermarket sausage for breakfast, and customers remember that.”
Balson’s is no stranger to receiving trophies and winning competitions, and has just won two gold awards at the recent Taste of the West awards.
The business will also be featuring in an hour long documentary for the BBC in early 2014, to mark its status as the oldest butchers in Britain.
