TWENTY walkers met at Shipton Gorge Village Hall for a short walk, a picnic lunch, the AGM and the necessary tea and cake.
With a threatening weather forecast and the sight of rain in the distance we decided to leave our lunches behind for a short walk so we could take our picnic in the hall itself.
We set off out of the village along Burbitt Lane which becomes a narrow muddy bridleway as it descends to the head of long lane.
Walkers with sensitive noses could smell gas, not a leak but the exhaust from Bridport’s own eternal flame, the chimney burning off the gas from the former refuse site, now a green and pleasant field with grazing sheep.
We now climbed what felt like an almost vertical path to the hill above Bridport with fine views over the town the sea and the interior.
Our eastward route along the crest of the hill gave us good panorama over Walditch and the Hyde.
At this point, with the threat of the weather having lessened we split into two groups, the larger party making direct for the village hall and lunch.
The smaller number walked down to Walditch and returned back to the top of the hill to arrive a little later at the hall but all in time for our meeting.
