Call for residents-only parking in Bridport
9:52am Tuesday 29th October 2013 in News
HOUSEHOLDERS in part of Bridport’s St Andrew’s Road are hoping to get residents-only parking outside their homes.
People living from numbers 33 to 86 have applied to the town council for the introduction of restricted parking as they say they cannot park outside their own homes.
Resident Andrew Rutherford told the town council highways and transportation sub-committee that parking on the road, which is often used by people who work in the town centre, had become increasingly difficult in the last five years.
“In some instances, vehicles parked on the road belong to people living elsewhere. On occasions such vehicles remain without being moved for considerable periods of time,” he said.
“It is very frustrating.”
The application is supported by most residents of the houses in that stretch of the road who signed a plea to the town council.
Town surveyor Daryl Chambers, pictured, said that previous applications had failed because there was no consensus from all residents.
But if householders in a specified section of the road agreed then the application through the county council could succeed.
Coun Phil Lathey said that parking was at a premium in the town.
“On a Saturday St Swithin’s Road is stacked right up to the end of the road.
“We have to look after our residents. This kind of application may expand if other residents see that it is working.”
It was agreed to put the application forward to the county.
