Down your way: Corscombe

We had our AGM for The Common Lane Project on Friday, October 11 combined with a bit of a party with a food buffet and drinks, celebrating some of the successes of the project.
This project has been helped so much by the Highways department, from Dorset County Council who have supplied 4,000 tons of scalpings from roadworks, we are so grateful to them. This has rendered the really boggy unwalkable areas now fine for walking.
We had a grant of £1,300 linked to the man hours our villagers have put in.
What a great job they did to secure this grant. Much more work is needed, the working parties are fun, so if you enjoy working in a group, in the countryside, please ring Freda Hennessy on 01935 891448 or Jenny and Simon Dalton on 01935 891671.
The dog walkers and horse riders are delighted with the improvements, and on a nice sunny day the walk from Corscombe to Halstock Community Shop, where one can get sustainance is delightful, as is the walk from Halstock to The Fox Inn Corscombe.
Suggestions were made to eventually get information boards, and carved out logs for seating, This ancient route is a haven for wildlife and rare wild flowers, so would be excellent for ranger-led educational walks, or treasure hunts. Schools please note!
It will be some time before the project is completed, but if we continue to get the support that is needed, we may be able to continue the work on ‘Rickards’ the track that runs from Knapp Farm right up to the 356 Dorchester/ Crewkerne Road, also ‘Barrow Lane’ which runs from Corscombe Village to ‘Linhay’ and Hackney Hill.
Of course this is very ambitious, but then ‘oak trees from little acorns grow’.
