Bridport pub regulars jumping for joy and aiding charity
STAFF and regulars at a Bridport pub have jumped out of a plane to raise thousands for a local hospice.
And the landlord of the Ropemakers in West Street will be losing his beloved locks this weekend to add to the fundraising total.
Mine host John Baker has been known for his trademark long hair, but he and regular Anthony Sparkes will face the razor on Saturday in aid of the Weldmar Hospicecare Trust.
The headshave will come at 4pm after a bring-and-buy sale at the pub between 11am and 3pm organised by the Ropemakers’ Lemmings Society.
And the Lemmings lived up to their name by making tandem parachute jumps last weekend from Dunkeswell airfield near Honiton.
The seven intrepid jumpers including Anthony, James Donohue, Aaron Brown, Tom Cosser, Zoe Redwood, Rhiannon Baker and Steve Gale plunged through the air to a safe landing and raised some £3,000 for the Weldmar Hospicecare Trust.
Landlord John Baker has had his hair long since he was a teenager some decades ago and but has agreed to see his curls disappear for the good cause.
“We are raising money for the hospice after a family friend spent some time there, and so did Anthony’s father,” said Mr Baker.
“The weather for the jump could not have been better, there wasn’t a cloud in the sky.
“They were all smiling before they went, but they had even bigger smiles afterwards.”
The Lemmings are asking for any donations for items for sale to be made to the pub by tomorrow, Friday October 11.
Later on Saturday evening a barbecue will be held during a performance by festival favourites Hobo Jones and The Junkyard Dogs, who will provide an evening of entertainment.
