Swannery opens bug hotel

HOW about this for bedbugs or, more accurately, bug beds?
A multi-storey ‘hotel’ for thousands of insects has been built at Abbotsbury Swannery.
The palatial accommodation for mini-beasts was designed and constructed by Swannery staff member Charlie Wheeler after a large grey poplar recently fell.
The tree was promptly logged to make the area safe, but then rather than just clearing the logs away and burning them, it was decided to use them for the benefit of the local bugs.
Charlie said: “We think the Swannery grounds could potentially harbour more than 2,000 species of insects. I built the Bug Hotel, with drilled dead wood, hollow bamboo and reed stems and other microhabitats, to try to fulfil this potential.
“The guests we most want to see are beneficial species like bumblebees, but all are welcome.”
