IT’S never too early to show an interest in music – as pre-school children in Lyme Regis are proving.

B Sharp young music leaders Jacques Verhaeren and Emma Franklin have introduced children as young as three to music-making.

The pair have been working with age three to five-year-olds at St Michael’s Pre School to bring music into the classroom.

It is part of B Sharp’s Big Mix project, based at The Hub youth club, where young people are getting hands-on experience in music leadership.

The aim of the sessions at St Michael’s Pre School is to take music to the classroom in a fun and refreshing way, complimenting and building on music activities that are already taking place.

B Sharp director Fran Williams said: “This is a pilot project and something that we would like to develop for the future.

“These sessions are specifically designed for early years but we are planning to take young leaders into primary schools later in the term.

“This is such a great way to engage children in music and at such an early age, at the same time providing young music leaders with an opportunity to gain experience with the much younger age group.

“Most of all it’s about fun, creativity and expression and about discovering different aspects of children’s personality and ways to engage children.”

Music leader Jacques Verhaeren has never worked with such young musicians.

“I have been with B Sharp for six years now, and despite the fact that we have achieved and taken part in many things, it is nice to have fresh challenges and opportunities within the organisation,” he said.

“Working with the early years group at St Michael's has been a fun and good learning experience for both me and the little ones.

“I have never taught music to a group so young, and I would say that the first session really surprised me as to how different it is.

“Four weeks in, and seeing the shy members of the group start to come to the fore makes the whole experience a very rewarding one.”
