Etherington and Hawkins return for key tussle
BEAMINSTER skipper Ross Baker will welcome back Fred Etherington and Joe Hawkins when his side entertain Bournemouth Seconds in Dorset Funeral Plan Division One tomorrow (2pm).
The duo have been major successes this season in what thus far has been an uninspiring campaign, but one which may be ignited with victory.
It is the first of three critical home games for Beaminster, with matches against Weymouth Seconds and Swanage, the two sides below them in the table, to follow.
Theoretically, three wins out of three from these matches should be enough to guarantee their survival, so long as they pick up the requisite points in between.
Bournemouth will present a tricky test but with home advantage (should the notoriously poorly draining outfield be fit for play, of course), Beaminster will fancy their chances of triumphing.
The batting, which was their Achilles heel at the beginning of the season, is in much better working order now and with Etherington and Hawkins returning to the side, the bowling, historically their strong suit, should have enough firepower and tenacity to restrict the visitors.
One of the Bournemouth's three victories this season came in the reverse fixture at Chapel Gate in what was a low-scoring affair with Beaminster limping to 165 all out before the home side overhauled the target six wickets down.
Other wins have come against Shroton and Swanage, but their confidence will be waning after last week's resounding defeat to Stalbridge.
Chasing an unlikely 259 to win, Bournemouth could only muster 90 in response to slump to one of the heaviest defeats witnessed in Division One this year.
