Let down by dirty toilets

DIRTY public toilets are giving Lyme Regis a bad name.

That is according to Lyme Regis town councillors, who heard last week that only 15 minutes is allowed for cleaning the public loos at Monmouth Beach.

Despite assurances from West Dorset District Council that the toilets are cleaned three times daily and checked regularly, town councillors say the standard is still not high enough.

Speaking at the community plan implementation committee, Lyme's district councillor Daryl Turner said he spoke to the cleaner, who said her vehicle is tracked to ensure she stays no longer.

Coun Turner said: "She gets 15 minutes to clean these toilets - it is impossible to get them up to reasonable standard within 15 minutes."

He warned the town council it was likely to face increased costs if it wanted a better standard of cleanliness, when it took over their running from the district council.

"You will not get the service you require at the cost West Dorset is paying," he said.

Coun Barbara Austin said she is still hearing complaints from visitors, including one tourist who said the toilets next to the Cobb Arms were absolutely disgusting'.

"I felt embarrassed," she said. "It is such bad publicity for the town."

Coun Stan Williams added: "It is giving Lyme a bad name. People are waiting until they get to the Woodmead Halls but that is not helping the people down at the Cobb.

"Life is going to be hard for seaside towns if we are going to go into slight depression."

Coun Sally Holman wanted to know if there was any immediate solution until the town council took over the running of the toilets.

"We seem powerless still to actually do anything about it," she said.

Councillors agreed to try and arrange a top level' meeting with district council officials.

Coun Lorna Jenkin suggested they carried out their own audit to get some indication of usage.
