Your chance to sail with an Earl

The majestic Earl of Pembroke, a historic square rigger which has appeared in numerous Hollywood movies and popular television programmes, is heading to Weymouth for a special visit this month.

Residents of the Dorset area will have an opportunity to sail on the tall ship in a series of trips from Weymouth harbour.

Three-hour sails will take place twice daily from Saturday, July 5 to Monday, July 7. You can also take the unique opportunity of joining the ship as voyager crew on a two-day voyage to Brest, France where the ship will be meeting tall ships around the world for the Brest Maritime Festival.

This trip is scheduled from Tuesday to Thursday, July 8 to 10.

The ship will also be offering people the unique chance to join the crew on overnight voyages from Weymouth to international ports where her attendance has been requested at maritime festivals such as Ostend and Brest 2008.

The Earl of Pembroke appeared in blockbuster films including Mansfield Park and Mel Gibson's Apocalypto, as well as BBC television series Hornblower, starring Ioan Gruffudd.

The vessel's captain, Francis Browne, said: "This ship is not a museum piece but a living, working ship.

"Visitors and passengers get to experience and understand what it's like to sail on a classic square rigger such as this."

The Earl of Pembroke started life in 1948 in Pukavik, Sweden, where she was known as Orion. As one of the last three-masted sailing schooners, she traded timber in the Baltic and British East Coast until being laid up in Thisted, Denmark.

Her current owners, Square Sail, purchased her in 1979 and the ship underwent a complete restoration.

In 1994 she was commissioned as the three-masted 18th century wooden barque that she is nowadays.

Square Sail, based in Charlestown, Cornwall, operates the Earl of Pembroke, together with her sister vessels Phoenix and Kaskelot, where they continue to work in film and television.

The multi-faceted company is expert in all aspects of marine filming.

A three-hour trip on the Earl of Pembroke is priced at £40 per person. To book your place or for information on the voyages, contact Square Sail on 01726 70241 or email info@square-sail.com
