*HEAD to Dorchester's newest attraction Shire Hall tonight (22) for an illustrated talk on a group of Bridport women who staged a wildcat strike.

The talk will be given in the Learning Room by Carlos Guarita with support from Cartoon Action Theatre.

A hundred years ago a group of women workers in Gundry’s net and rope factory in Bridport staged a wildcat strike. They walked around the town singing suffragette songs. They refused arbitration from the local MP and returned to work only after a London trade union official came down to sign them up and settle the dispute.

All this would long be forgotten except that a young photographer, Clarence Henry Austin, was on the spot to record the scenes.

Original research unearthed new material about the life of this unknown but gifted photojournalist, whose work interweaves with the social history of Bridport, and who came to a tragic end.

Doors open at 7pm and the talk starts at 7.30pm. Admission is £3.

*KINGSTON Maurward College is opening its doors on Sunday from 10am to 5pm for an open day and food fair.

Foodies will be able to enjoy a food terrace, Pimm's tent and cider bar. There will be plenty of family fun at the animal park with circus skills, a bouncy castle, soft play area and guinea pig fishing. Floristry students will be showing off circus themed fashion extravaganzas at 2.30pm and 3.30om on the main house terrace.

*GROOVE along to The Producers at Dorchester Corn Exchange tonight at 8pm.
