MEMORIAL TO 'SPEEDY'

MOST of us have heard of the Cutty Sark. But fewer are familiar with Speedy, an Australian clipper ship built at West Bay said to have vied with the Cutty Sark.
The memorial to this plucky vessel is in Bucky Doo Square, Bridport.
Speedy was built for was built for WM. Prowse & Sons of Liverpool and was 192 ft long, 202 ft overall, with a beam of 33 ft, hold depth of 21 ft and poopof 62 ft long.
She arrived at Sydney, Australia, on March 22, 1854, from London on December 22, 1853, under Capt Nightingale, with 30 passengers. The Speedy arrived again at Sydney on April 9, 1855, from Southampton on January 6, having left London on the second, a total voyage of 92 days carrying 417 government immigrants.
