PETE Canter will bring his compelling take on music to the Jazz Lounge at the Marine Theatre in Lyme Regis.

His quartet is a group of supremely talented musicians (saxophone, piano, double bass and drums) who bring a charming and direct approach to a wide variety of music including driving bebop, quirky blues, Latin jazz grooves and dramatic ballads.

Pete Canter on soprano, alto and tenor saxophones has a fluid and lyrical style with great rhythmic punch and a beautiful sound on all three instruments.

He has recorded several albums which been very well received, and played at major UK festivals including the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Teignmouth Jazz Festival, Bude Jazz Festival, and Exeter Vibraphonic.

In reviews Ian Mann has praised Canter as 'a skilled composer across a range of jazz styles and an inventive soloist with a distinctive sound' and Musician Magazine has described him as 'varied, exciting, exceptional'.

Pianist Philip Clouts has a long pedigree as a musician, particularly known for his work playing South African jazz on the London scene. His music has recently been played on BBC Radio 2’s Jamie Cullum Show, with The Guardian appreciating the “precise ebullience and relaxed funkiness” of his latest CD release.

Marcus Vergette is a much sought after double bass player (as well as being a sculptor, film-maker and composer). He has played music for over thirty years, during which time he has toured with many bands nationally and internationally, and was featured as a musician and composer on BBC Radio 3's "Jazz on 3" programme.

Drummer Coach York is self-taught and a complete natural, having started his career in reggae and soul bands with many tours of the UK in the 80s. Over the years he has also worked extensively with most of the top names on the British Jazz scene, accompanying people like Peter King, Jim Mullen, Don Rendell, Alan Barnes and many others. He is also the regular drummer in the Mike Westbrook Big Band.

The Pete Canter Quartet is adventurous and contemporary while keeping itself accessible and firmly rooted within the popular jazz tradition, and the interplay between the musicians will make for a lively and colourful evening as the auditorium of the Marine Theatre is transformed into a ‘Jazz Lounge’.
