SEVEN artist-makers from Dorset and Devon are happily Crossing the Line between craft and art for a contemporary exhibition on show at the Town Mill’s Malthouse Gallery in Lyme Regis from July 28 until August 9.
Jennie Hanrahan, Brendon Murless, Caroline Parrott, Barbara Green, Nicola Dennis, Jeanne Goodridge and Sue Calder will be showcasing their skills in ceramics, sculpture, metalworking, printing, painting, illustration, photography and textiles.
Through their unique and inspiring work, they aim to question what, if any, tangible distinctions exist between being an artist or a craft maker.
Is it the material they work in? Is it the object’s ultimate use? What about the maker’s intentions? The show will offer a tangible and lively debate on these issues and encourage visitors to express their own opinions on the supposed border between craft and art.
Over at the Courtyard Gallery, from July 28 until August 16, Lyme-based figurative artist Justin Clark will be holding a solo exhibition of his colourful drawings and paintings, called Life in Colour. As he puts it, “each picture on show shares a struggle between sharing the awe that I feel about the human form and distilling those four-dimensional graces into two.” Justin’s work has been exhibited many times in the Mall Galleries, London, and is in private collections across the world.
Both Crossing the Line and Life in Colour will be open daily from 10.30am to 4.30pm July 28 to August 9 at the Malthouse Gallery in Lyme Regis. Admission is free, and further information can be found by visiting townmillarts.co.uk
