A PLAY involving a large community cast and local creatives continues this week in Lyme.

Monmouth is at the Marine Theatre tonight (13), tomorrow and Friday after a series of gala performances last week.

It tells the story of the Monmouth Rebellion which began in Lyme in 1685. It was created by the team behind last summer’s The Tempest of Lyme writer Andrew Rattenbury (Doc Martin,The Golden Hour), and Marine artistic director Clemmie Reynolds.

It tells the story of a pivotal piece of South West history and has provided a fantastic opportunity for local people of all ages and abilities to build confidence, learn new skills and engage with the arts.

Monmouth will be performed by a community cast of actors, musicians and singers and features live music and film projection. The show starts at Lyme's harbour - the Cobb - where audiences will witness Monmouth's landing at Lyme, taking part in the action by joining the rebel procession along the seafront to the theatre, where the play will begin...

The play's opening night falls on the same date that the bloody battle of Sedgemoor took place, with the final performance taking place on the same date of Monmouth's execution 332 years ago.

It follows on from last year's NODA award-winning community play The Tempest of Lyme.

After this week's performances of Monmouth, the play will tour the west country in the autumn to the towns and cities involved in the Rebellion, featuring a professional cast of five south west actor-musicians.

It will be at the Bridport Arts Centre on Saturday, September 15, and Dorchester Corn Exchange on Sunday, October 8.
