DANCING Bear, Dancing Bear, a new theatre production in which the audience wear headphones, will put men’s bodies under the spotlight.

In a culture where the female body is often objectified, Gameshow (Matt Ryan and Matthew Evans) subverts expectations by inviting a woman (Hannah Ringham) to narrate while their naked bodies and masculinities are exposed.

Over audience headphones using silent disco technology, Hannah’s voice insults and instructs the men, tells stories about them and imagines other lives for them.

Accompanied by a soundscape of original music, the voiceover is sometimes humorous, sometimes intimate - getting inside the audience’s heads and reflecting on their own position in the patriarchy.

Meanwhile, Matt and Matthew playfully explore men’s body language on stage.

They wear a series of apparently masculine outfits and try out provocatively feminine poses; their carefully choreographed sequences blur into hectic chaotic games.

The show, which will be at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts, on Saturday January 21 at 8pm, is described as “an experiential journey through the complexities and contradictions of gender and identity.”
