A TRADITIONAL New Year's concert will get 2017 off to a flying start.

The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) will be treating the town to a New Year Johann Strauss Gala at Weymouth Pavilion on Friday January 13.

It will feature sparkling Strauss waltzes, marches and polkas.

BSO under its former BSO Leverhulme Young Conductor in Association, Frank Zielhorst, will perform works by the Waltz King, Johann Strauss.

Joining them to welcome in the New Year will be the Lancashire-born soprano Soraya Mafi.

The Overture to The Gypsy Baron will be heard at this concert, along with other favourites such as the Emperor Waltz, Voices of Spring and Thunder and Lightning Polka. Also on the programme will be Strauss's father's most famous piece, the Radetzky March.

Winner of the Susan Chilcott Award 2016, Soraya Mafi studied at both the Royal Northern College of Music and Royal College of Music before embarking on a successful career with some of this country’s leading orchestras.

This season Mafi will make role debuts as Mabel in Mike Leigh’s production of The Pirates of Penzance and as Yum-Yum in Jonathan Miller’s production of The Mikado, both for English National Opera.
