HARMONY-driven alt pop band The Gravity Drive are gearing up to release their new single Kaleidoscope from their new album The Wildlight.

Elijah and Ava Wolf of Bridport, who make up the band, recorded their debut album Testament in their living room.

Kaleidoscope, an uplifting, anthemic pop song, is currently being played on Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music and has been mixed by Chris Potter who is famous for working with The Verve and The Feeling.

The singing couple have prided themselves on receiving national radio airplay without having a record label or a manager, and now, they’ve launched a crowdfunding campaign to help them raise funds to complete their new album.

Catching up with Elijah, he said the duo, both musically and off the song sheet, are hoping their new album will bring a new type of sound to their fans.

He said: “Our first album Testament had a sense of urgency. As an independent act we wanted to make a mark.

“We were keen to be heard and the first album reflects that sonically. We gained confidence from the response to our debut album and our new album The Wildlight reflects that confidence in terms of the songs and sound. We’ve grown up!”

The first album was recorded in the couple’s kitchen which Elijah said ‘was great in the sense that anyone with a laptop and some music software can make records’, but it had its limitations.

He said: “This time round we wanted to give our drummer Ryan Halsey the opportunity to capture his playing and drum sound in the best possible way.

“We recorded the drums and the electric guitar at an amazing studio called Middle Farm in Devon. This has made the sound of our album warmer, wider and more wonderful.”

Elijah has written a lot of the songs on piano and electric guitar for this album. Ava is also singing lead vocal on several tracks this time round.

But the couple can’t do it all alone. They need fans help to make their dream of a second album a reality.

Elijah said: “When we had finished the recording of our new single Kaleidoscope we cheekily sent the track to some very well known top of the game music producers, and asked them if they would consider mixing and mastering the song.

“To our amazement they thought Kaleidoscope was brilliant. As an independent band we funded the majority of the album recording, but in order to create music that can stand shoulder to shoulder with any major label financed release, we need to work with experienced producers who can help us develop and build upon the buzz of our debut album – and they need to be paid.”

He added: “To work with that calibre of producer without the support of a major label as an independent act we need help.

“We had to think outside the box, and crowd-funding seemed to be one way that we could raise the funds.

“It’s an effective idea that’s worked for many people. When you make a donation, you receive a ‘reward’, for example you can pre-order our new album now and receive it as soon as its finished before its release date.

“Anybody who makes any donation whatsoever will receive a download of our new single Kaleidoscope which is currently being played on Radio 2.”

So far, the campaign has raised over £2,000.

Elijah said: “We are completely overwhelmed by people’s generosity so far.

“The campaign runs until the January 9 and we’ve already hit 20 per cent of our target.”

The duo are hoping to raise £10,000 by their deadline date. Most of the support drummed up has been from local fans. The Gravity Drive have a loyal local following.

Elijah said: “Every time we perform locally we always feel like there is a lot of love in the room and there is a great selection of music venues to play in.”

And local fans have plenty to look forward to for the new year and era of Gravity Drive.

Elijah said: “We will announce new local dates in the new year. We will definitely be returning to perform at The Eype Centre for The Arts next year. We had a great gig a couple of weeks ago. It’s such an amazing venue to perform in.

“Luckily we are best mates as well as being married. We have a shared mission.”
