Sometimes in life you have to take the rough with the smooth. Jamie Lawson has done just that. Talking to Jessica Rees ahead of Camp Bestival, Jamie explains while he's enjoying every moment, he won't rest, and he's ready to roughen things up a bit.

IF you want something bad enough, persevere and you might just get it. Jamie Lawson is testament to that – his hard work is finally paying off.

In the past year, he's gone from gigs with only a handful of people to tours around the world performing alongside the likes of Ed Sheeran and One Direction.

Now, there's only one direction the soulful singer is heading in, and that's to Dorset for Camp Bestival at Lulworth Castle this weekend.

Jamie's pure and beautiful ballads and soulful songs were enough to capture the attention of today's most successful male singer, Ed Sheeran, and give Jamie his big break, and it's easy to see why.

Born and raised in Plymouth, Devon, Jamie is so humble and down to earth, he has secured the following of millions of fans, leading to a string of sell-out gigs and concerts around the country.

He's a regular on the festival circuit for this summer, and this weekend, he'll be strumming away at his guitar at Camp Bestival.

Jamie said: "It will be my first time at Camp Bestival but I've heard great things and I'm excited for it, and for Turin Brakes, they are amazing.

"We have a UK tour in October working the way around everywhere and also going to Plymouth my home town."

While he's still in one place, currently Manchester, I take the moment to chat to him ahead of his first gig in Dorset.

Jamie said: "I'm doing festivals every weekend at the moment, I just came back from playing at Pembroke Castle where they had Jools Holland too and I've got Splendour in Nottingham festival coming up."

While he loves any chance to get on stage, he also loves the variety of the audiences he performs to.

Jamie said: "It's interesting because people who come to gigs know what to expect and know the music and it will be an intimate affair.

"At festivals, the audience is up for a night out all day long so it's a different feeling and a lot looser."

As the first signing to Ed Sheeran's label Gingerbread Man Records, Jamie was catapulted into the world of the Ellen DeGeneres Show, national radio, as support act to Ed Sheeran and One Direction's tours and onto the world stage on You Tube pretty much overnight.

Now, his incredible hit Wasn't Expecting That has racked up 13 million hits on You Tube and it's only the beginning for the singer.

Despite being a recognisable name and singing a song you can't get out of your head, he's been plugging at his big break and success for years.

Don't let his youthful looks deceive you, he's 40. There's a reason why his voice sounds so wise and soulful.

Jamie said: "I've been working towards this for a long time but it's been great and I'm really grateful.

"I'm buzzing off people singing my songs back at me."

Jamie said he gets a lot back from other songs too.

"They all mean different things to me. I love Still Yours."

People contact him through social media to tell him how his songs have helped them get through trialling times.

And it's nice to hear of an artist not using their Twitter account to shame another artist or bury them – at least, I haven't heard of the #JamieLawsonisoverparty just yet, and I can't see it happening anytime soon.

Jamie said: "I control my own social media and try and answer as many things as I can and always for people that send something meaningful."

While there's no doubt that the modest singer is Mr Nice Guy, he admits he's ready to spice things up just a bit.

He said: "I'm not good at relaxing, I want to keep going. I'm happy writing songs and enjoy playing live but it's nice to be doing it now to a lot more people.

"I'm writing new songs at the moment and looking at November for a new album.

"While I don't think I'm about to go electro anytime soon, I think it'll be an extension of what we already have.

"The last album was clean and polite, this time it will be a bit rougher."

Well, taking the rough with the smooth, that's what the hokey cokey's all about right?

The new album sounds like something to look forward to. Although Jamie's had a huge success with Wasn't Expecting That, there's no doubt that the first album is always hard to follow.

Lucky for him, the rest of his album, including the stunning track Cold in Ohio, indicates that he'll be anything but a one-hit wonder. No wonder the album went gold, selling hundreds of thousands of copies.

The singer has a talent that's undefinable. He doesn't fit the crowd amongst other folk and indie singers. For starters, he owns a hairbrush.

Nevertheless, Jamie is still adamant not to get ahead of himself. He just wants to enjoy every moment performing on stage.

He said: "I know in this industry everything doesn't always last forever so I'm just trying to make the most of it."
