CERNE ABBAS, NEAR DORCHESTER

TAKE a trip to this scenic village which is so much more than the Giant for which it is famed.

Cerne Abbas is a chocolate box village with plenty of hidden charms.

There's an ancient holy well dedicated to St Augustine alongside the Cerne Abbey ruins, which can still be explored today.

The abbey was founded in 987, destroyed by Henry VIII in 1539 and a few surviving buildings, a guesthouse, a gatehouse and a tithe barn, can also be visited.

St Mary's church, which was built by the abbey for the parish in the late thirteenth century, remains a focal point of the village, with many original features still intact.

The village also boasts a pub, a tearoom and several shops. See cernevalley.co.uk for more information.
