ENID BLYTON'S SUMMER STORIES

A wonderful selection of stories will be published in time for the holiday season. Blyton's stories are well over seventy years old and still appeal to children today who love going to the seaside, on picnics or to summer fairs. One treat which is unusual nowadays is a visit to the circus, and Enid Blyton includes a circus story called Jimmy and the Elephant Man. Jimmy was going to miss out on a trip to the circus but after doing a good turn for an old lady, he ended up going to the Big Top!

The stories are not illustrated but each story is introduced by a modern black and white sketch appropriate to the particular tale.

Enid Blyton's attitude to children is very positive, and the children in her books are presumed to have plenty of common sense, and go out and have adventures. In the 1950s youngsters could venture a reasonable distance from home without adult supervision.

Dorset is the county that Enid Blyton adopted and it provided the inspiration for many of her characters. She came to Purbeck three times a year on holiday, and based some of her characters and locations on people and places in Dorset. The stories are just the right length for a bedtime story for those children who may be fortunate enough to enjoy a traditional seaside holiday this year.
