A TALK on the history of Kingston Maurward will be held on Thursday (14) at St George's Church Hall in Fordington, Dorchester at 7.30pm.
Starting from 1244, this talk will cover the intriguing development of the estate including why there are two Grade I listed houses in close proximity; the powerful (but not always rich) Grey and Pitt families; why a fine brick-built house was clad in Portland stone; what and who inspired Thomas Hardy; the estate’s role in World War II and the D-Day landings; the disappearing temple and links with the RHS; as well as the emergence of the Dorset Farm Institute.
The speaker, Tim Loasby, is a local Blue Badge guide.
The talk is presented by the National Trust South Dorset Association and costs £3 for members and £4 for guests including tea and biscuits.
