AN EXPLOSIVE new play will be electrifying audiences across Dorset as it explores contemporary issues.

Coming to three venues across Dorset in July, including the Marine Theatre on July 7 and Bridport Arts Centre on July 8, Electric Dreams is is inspired by Naomi Klein’s The Shock Doctrine, and brought by the critically acclaimed company Dumbshow.

Combining a trademark storytelling style with urgent contemporary issues, Electric Dreams is a vibrant, unsettling and bold examination of the state of the nation explored through a human story – a love story.

Rose cannot remember the first 18 years of her life. What happened to her?

She meets Sebastian, who, haunted by his own past, encourages Rose to unravel the mystery of her own life.

Rose turns investigator, piecing together her history from fragmented memories, documents and dreams, aided by staff in a library with their treasure trove of resources.

Electric Dreams journeys from 1950s Canada, to 1970s Chile, the 2003 Iraq war and the present day; but does exploring the past offer a warning for the future?

The play is accompanied by live music composed and performed by Rollo Clarke.

Director Michael Bryher said: “Electric Dreams certainly feels like the most political piece we have made.

“We want our audiences to reconsider where we’ve come from and where we’re going and engage with a political debate about what kind of country we want to be.

“We also want to entertain them with a gripping story based on true events.”

Dumbshow was established in 2007 and creates theatre that asks questions about the world through stories.
