MARCHING band members have a spring in their step for their next concert.

The Wessex Military Band is welcoming everyone to its upcoming Bridport in Blossom Time spring concert at Bridport Arts Centre on Sunday May 22 at 3pm.

The local band and the arts centre have had a long association, holding annual concerts in the 1830s building.

The band started life as a youth band in 1981 under the inspiration of the then bandmaster Martin Davison.

Initially the band drew its players from schools in and around West Dorset, and started out as a brass band, marching band and majorette troop.

The band went on to build its great reputation and today proudly performs at around 40 engagements annually.

Its musicians wear a distinctive cavalry style scarlet tunic that has yellow or gold piped braiding on the epaulettes and cuffs, depending on rank.

They are proud to support the arts centre, which it says provides the band with a venue exactly suited to its requirements, and offers the audience an experience where they feel part of the proceedings.

At the spring concert, there will be an opportunity to meet and talk to the band.
