DRAMA, profound emotions and wonderful melodies combine in a famous opera being shown in Dorchester.

Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata is one of the composer’s most popular works and it is being screened live at the Plaza Cinema.

The production from the Royal Opera House can be seen at 6.45pm on February 4.

Adam Cunard, the cinema’s managing director, said: “This will be our first live opera of the year – and I am sure it will be popular.

“I know the cinema’s audiences enjoy our screenings from the Royal Opera House and La Traviata will not fail to delight them.

“Hopefully, some newcomers might be tempted to come along as well.”

The Royal Opera will bring to life one of opera’s greatest tragedies.

Perfect for first-time opera goers, La Traviata has been described as a shining example of opera at its best and is sure not to leave a dry eye in the house.

The sumptuous production opens in the indulgent social whirl of 19th century Paris. Beautiful courtesan Violetta leads a life of glamour but darker undercurrents emerge after she meets the love of her life, Alfredo, and the young couple are forced apart by society.

Verdi’s sensational score ranges from the jubilant to the heart-breaking.

This production features traditional staging with stunning grand costumes and is set in gloriously opulent ballrooms.

It will be performed by an all-star cast which includes Venera Gimadieva and Samir Pirgu as the doomed lovers.

La Traviata is also showing at Cineworld Weymouth.
