TWO talented artists will showcase their expressive and colourful landscapes in Lyme Regis.

At the Town Mill, An Unruly Brush with Life by Stephen Collins and Sea, Sky and Stills will be on show from tomorrow (20) until Wednesday, December 2.

Stephen describes his new show at The Malthouse as 'a visual record of the battles fought between heart and head when I'm painting'.

A precision engineer by trade, Stephen found that painting offered an escape from the exacting demands of his occupation.

He said: “In painting I found two things - a way of expressing my love of nature and a freedom I found nowhere else.

"Ideas or projects hold no charms for me. I paint from life, or the imagination, only that which takes my fancy. As a self-taught painter, I have only my inner voice to guide me.”

George's exhibition in the Courtyard Gallery will feature his impressionistic oil paintings of the Dorset coast, often based on initial 'plein air' sketches - along with photographs taken on site.

Local spots such as Lyme Regis and the Cobb, Charmouth’s sandy beach at low tide and the magnificent view above Abbotsbury towards Portland are regularly revisited.

Concerned with the figurative and personal rather than the abstract, George is particularly inspired by the light just before or after storms or showers and at dawn and sunset.

As relief from the outdoors and harsh weather, he also produces still life work that depend on careful observation and the representation of light and reflections. This is his first solo show since returning from France and setting up a new studio in Long Bredy.

Both exhibitions will be open daily from 10.30am until 4.30pm. The artists will be welcoming visitors to a joint private view on Friday, November 20 from 6pm to8pm.
