OLD WARDOUR CASTLE
NEAR TISBURY, WILTSHIRE
LESS than 30 miles away is this 14th century castle which was once a lightly fortified luxury residence for comfortable living and lavish entertainment.
The castle is now looked after by English Heritage and was the inspiration for the one featured in the Kevin Costner film 'Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves'.
An audio tour tells of Old Wardour’s eventful past and the fighting it saw during the Civil War.
The badly damaged castle became a fashionable romantic ruin, and in the 18th century was incorporated into the landscaped grounds of the New Wardour House.
The castle is open daily from 10am to 4pm. See english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/old-wardour-castle/ for more details.
